Shirley Monge

January 5, 1936 – April 6, 2023

In loving memory of Mrs. Shirley Monge who passed away on Holy Thursday, April 6th, 2023. Shirley was born on January 5, 1936 in Louisville, KY to Cofer and Huberta Weihe. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, she earned her Bachelor’s from Ursuline College and Master's in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky.
After earning her Master’s degree, Shirley went west to San Diego where she met the love of her life Bart, whom she married just six weeks after meeting. They raised ten children and traveled to over 40 countries, celebrating 53 years of marriage together. One of their great joys was bringing the entire family on trips around the world. Shirley was known for her athletic talent, intelligence, wit, beauty, and love of Diet Coke with extra ice! A faithful Catholic, she regularly attended daily Mass and loved learning about Scripture. Her not-so-guilty pleasure was shopping, as she loved to wear clothes in every color and shade – and had an eye for distinguishing fuchsia from magenta and teal from turquoise. Although she enjoyed teaching math at Santa Ana College, she considered her greatest accomplishment to be raising her children, and it’s a testament to her hard work that they remain close to this day.

Shirley passed due to natural causes peacefully and surrounded by family. She is survived by her son Tony and wife Norma, their three sons Daniel and wife Cathy, David and wife Ashley (children Lennon, Levi and Lincoln), and Andrew; daughter Andrea and husband Larry with their children Adam and Austen; son Rocky; son Mike and wife Heidi, their daughter Jordan and husband Hirav (children Lucia, Nicholas, and Benedict); son Troy and wife Cynthia with their children Samantha, Isabella, Anthony, Savanna, Victoria, and Brody; son Rick; daughter Melanie with her children Ashleigh and Casey; son Louie and wife Yuko with their children Mona and Elsa; daughter Kathy; and son Bruce.

In lieu of flowers, the Monge family kindly requests that you donate to the Mater Dei Annual Appeal, which provides scholarships for students in need and generously provided for the education of all ten Monge children. To donate, contact Melinda at (714) 850-9534 or go to www.materdei.org/apps/pages/annualgiving. There will be a funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Costa Mesa on Saturday, April 29th at 11am, with a reception at Heritage-Dilday in Huntington Beach.
